The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers an exceptional opportunity for passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from diverse backgrounds. Through academic study, research, or English teaching abroad, participants engage in cross-cultural dialogue and gain a deeper appreciation for others’ perspectives, beliefs, and ways of life.

By living and working with people from the host country, Fulbrighters create meaningful connections, fostering mutual understanding and promoting cultural exchange in an atmosphere of openness and intellectual freedom.

Opportunities include grants to earn graduate degrees, conduct research, and teach English abroad. Applicants must be US citizens.

Affinity groups and the Exchange Alumni network support grantees during and after their grant period, including career support.

The Beinecke Scholarship provides funding for graduate studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Recipients may apply funding to any research-focused degree in an arts, humanities, or social sciences field, or an MFA.

To be eligible for this award, applicants must be current juniors, have documented financial need (preference for students receiving a Pell Grant, though this is not required) and must be US citizens.

The Goldwater Scholarship is a prestigious award which supports undergraduates pursuing research careers in science, math, and engineering.

Fulbright US/UK Summer Institutes are all-expense-paid summer study abroad programs in the United Kingdom for first and second year students. There is a preference for students who have not had experiences abroad. A 3.7 GPA is required.

The DAAD RISE program offers paid summer research internships in science and engineering in Germany. English is the working language and no German is required. There are no citizenship requirements for full-time Beloit students.

Critical Language Scholarships are fully-funded summer language-intensive programs abroad. This is a great opportunity to advance your study of Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or another less-commonly taught language, or to start learning a language!

The Rangel Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program at Howard University to prepare students for careers in the Foreign Service. Tuition, travel, housing, meals, and a stipend are provided. Sophomore standing is required at the time of application and you must remain enrolled as an undergraduate in the fall following the program. A 3.2 GPA is required.

The Gilman Scholarship, administered by the Institute of International Education and funded by the U.S. Department of State, offers American students with limited financial means the opportunity to study or intern abroad.

By providing financial support, the scholarship aims to enable students to gain proficiency in diverse languages and cultures, fostering their academic and career development while promoting a generation of future American leaders with international networks and skills crucial for U.S. national security and economic prosperity.

• Truman Scholarship: Focused on cultivating leaders committed to public service and policy-making. Apply as a junior.
• Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship and Rangel Graduate Fellowship Program: Funding for masters programs and internship placements to advance a career in the US Foreign Service. Apply as a senior or alumni. 
• Payne Graduate Fellowship: Funding for a masters program and summer professional placements to advance a career in USAID. Apply as a senior or alumni.
• Marshall Scholarship: Aims to fund outstanding American students for postgraduate studies at UK universities. Apply as a senior.
• Mitchell Scholarship: Supports American students for postgraduate study on the island of Ireland. Apply as a senior.
• Schwarzman Scholars: Offers a fully-funded master’s degree in global affairs with a focus on China. Apply as a senior.

These need-based scholarships do not require an application. Simply submit your study abroad application by either February 1st or September 15th to be considered.

To apply, students must submit a short essay about how the program related to human rights and social justice. We advise you to take some time on this application and meet with GEO staff if you have questions.

You must apply by April 1st for fall programs and by November 1st for spring programs.

This award is intended to replace on- or off-campus income during a semester or year-long study abroad program.

Why? Learning what opportunities are available and appeal to you can help you in planning your academic experiences at Beloit.

You might begin applications as early as December of your first year, all the way through your early career (yes, alumni–no matter your class year–are welcome to explore their options!).

In general, you will apply about 1 year before you intend to start the fellowship. For example, if you are pursuing a fellowship for graduate study or a Fulbright, you will apply in fall of your senior year to begin the following fall. 

No! Some awards (notably the Fulbright US Student Program) are open to individuals who hold a bachelors’ degree. If you’re enrolled in a graduate program, you may be eligible for other awards, too! We are happy to partner with you as you explore opportunities. Email GEO staff for more information.

Nothing! Applying is free and all on-campus support, for current students and alumni, is available at no cost.

More importantly, the experiences are funded. This means expenses associated with participation, like airfare, housing, and meals, are generally covered for international programs.

Some awards include scholarships for continuing your bachelors’ or to pursue graduate studies. 

No! Many fellowships have no GPA requirement at all. You are so much more than a number or a list of grades. Your experiences, efforts, and accomplishments are more likely to influence your success than grades.

That said, some awards do have GPA requirements; be sure to check these and be realistic about your progression.

For many awards, US citizenship is required. Not all awards have this requirement. As you explore opportunities, be sure to check the eligibility requirements.

Applying for nationally competitive awards is an inherently developmental process and a high-impact learning experience. Applicants benefit from support at all stages–including (perhaps especially) before they have even decided to apply.
